Since its creation in 1981, the holding company, RAR - Sociedade de Controle (Holding), S.A., has controlled, directly or indirectly, the entire Group’s shareholdings.
RAR Holding takes a challenging attitude towards the companies it manages. The business’ portfolio and capital allocation defines the Group’s strategies and generic guidelines and assures some specialised services. In addition to the co-ordination of these central activities and the definition of the Group governance rules, it also takes care of its relationship within the community.
In the area of social responsibility, RAR contributes to social and civic causes through sponsorship and donations to various institutions, particularly those directed at culture, education, research and innovation.
RAR was a founding member of the “Serralves Foundation” and the “Casa da Música Foundation”. RAR has also been involved in the creation of several leading organizations such as “COTEC Portugal - Business Association for Innovation”, “Portugal Foods” and the “Porto de Futuro” project. RAR participated in the establishment and development of the “Porto School of Biotechnology” and “Porto Business School” and, through its subsidiaries, co-operates with the “University of Southampton”, the “FEUP” (University of Porto Engineering College), the “IBET” (Biotechnology Research) and “ISVOUGA - Instituto Superior de Entre o Douro e Vouga”.
